    Abstract
The use of heavy machinery aims to simplify labor, enabling desired outcomes to be achieved more easily and efficiently within a relatively short time. A commonly selected heavy machine in high‑rise projects is the tower crane. Tower cranes are typically used in multi‑story building projects to lift materials to high elevations within confined work areas. In the construction of the Murni Teguh Methodist Susanna Wesley General Hospital in Medan, a single XCMG XGT5610‑6S1 tower crane (maximum capacity 6 tons) was deployed to support work on the fifth‑floor columns. While the tower crane enhances efficiency, operational costs are considerable and depend heavily on the crane’s productivity and effectiveness. Therefore, an effectiveness analysis was conducted to determine the cost of using the tower crane, the time required to complete specific construction tasks, and whether the crane contributed productively to project execution.A descriptive quantitative observation method was employed over 12 working days, with monitoring periods from 08:00–12:00 and 13:00–17:00, collecting cycle time data for lifting formwork, rebar, and concrete buckets. The analysis revealed that the average cycle time for the three tasks was 835.81 minutes. The average productivity reached 3,000.17 kg/hour, with daily peaks and lows reaching 5,788.35 kg/hour and 829.04 kg/hour, respectively, influenced by load variation and weather conditions. The tower crane’s utilization rate stood at 60.05%, categorized as “moderately effective” under the 60–80% standard. Total operational costs for the fifth‑floor column work amounted to IDR 207,555,914, covering crane foundation setup, operator and rigger wages, and maintenance expenses.
