    Abstract
Background: Indonesia is a country rich in cultural diversity, consisting of various ethnic groups, one of which is the Batak Toba community in North Sumatra. One of the important components of Batak identity is the clan system, which serves as a marker of lineage, social roles, and cultural heritage. One of those clans, Napitupulu, holds a significant position both historically and genealogically. However, the current generation tends to have less understanding of the origins and meaning of their clan identity, especially among the descendants of Napitupulu. Objective: This study aims to describe the historical origin and trace the genealogical structure of the Napitupulu clan within the Batak Toba community, to preserve and reintroduce cultural values and ancestral heritage to future generations. Method: This research adopts a qualitative descriptive method supported by structural functional theory. Data were collected through literature review, documentation, and casual interviews with selected informants from the Napitupulu clan and traditional Batak leaders. The analysis includes data reduction, display, and interpretation to establish a coherent narrative. Results: The findings reveal that the Napitupulu clan is the seventh patrilineal descendant of Si Raja Batak, originating from Raja Sonakmalela’s youngest son. The name “Napitupulu” is symbolically associated with the number seven, recurring in various ritualistic and life events surrounding the clan’s origin. The genealogical branches of the clan include notable descendants such as Raja Salim Babiat (Sangkar Nihuta), Raja Siongkal Barita (Sibegu Laos), and Raja Bona ni Onan (Pardede), each bearing distinct historical and cultural narratives that reinforce clan identity and social function within Batak Toba society. Conclusion: The Napitupulu clan represents a foundational component of Batak Toba cultural and social systems, contributing to the preservation of kinship, ritual practices, and ancestral knowledge. Reaffirming the history and genealogy of the Napitupulu clan is essential for maintaining cultural continuity in an era of rapid globalization and cultural dilution.
