Analysis of the Habib Title in Arabic Clans in Dadap Village, Medan City
Abstract
This research is a field research with anthropolinguistic studies. This type of research is ethnographic research and uses data collection techniques by means of observation, interviews, and documentation. This research is a qualitative research that aims to analyze the title of habib in the clan in Kampung Dadap, Medan City. The theory used in this study is the theory of Berg (1989). Habib is a title given to the descendants of the Prophet Muhammad SAW. Not all descendants of the Prophet Muhammad SAW want to be called habib because they feel they are not yet able to fully emulate the characteristics of the Prophet Muhammad. Most of those who are called with the title of habib are scholars who have sufficient religious knowledge. In Dadap Village, Medan City, there are twenty clans with the title of habib. The clans are Baagil, Baagil, Bin Yahya, Al Mutahar, Al Qadri, Al Mahdaly, Syahab, Al Muhdor, Jamalul Lail, Al Hamid, Al Jufri, Al Munawwar, As Sakran, Al Habsy, Alatas, Al Kaf, As Segaf, Alaydrus, Al Hadad, Basyaiban, dan Bin Smith. Three clans have meanings of futurative hope. The clans are Baagil, Bin Yahya, and Al Mutahar. Ten clans have meanings of situational hope. The clans are Al Qadri, Al Mahdaly, Syahab, Al Muhdor, Jamalul Lail, Al Hamid, Al Jufri, Al Munawwar, As Sakran, Al Habsy and seven surnames meaning memories. The surnames are Alatas, Al Kaf, As Segaf, Alaydrus, Al Hadad, Basyaiban, dan Bin Smith.
