Analisis Prinsip Kesopanan yang Digunakan dalam Briefing Sidang Umum oleh Sekretaris Jenderal Perserikatan Bangsa-Bangsa, Y.M. Antonio Guterres
Abstract
This thesis analyzes the types of maxims on the principle of politeness used in the
activities of the Antonio Guterres General Assembly: 54th plenary meeting, 78th
session. In analyzing the data, the theory of politeness principles proposed by Leech
(1983) is used to identify the types of maxims found in speech activities. This study
uses a descriptive qualitative method. The data of this study are speeches from the
transcript of the video text of the speech on YouTube. The data source in this study is
a video of a speech uploaded on the United Nations YouTube account. The results of
this study indicate that there are a total of 40 data into 6 types of identified maxims:
1) Tact Maxim 2) Generosity Maxim 3) Approbation Maxim 4) Modesty Maxim 5)
Agreement Maxim 6) Sympathy Maxim. Frequency analysis shows that the
Generosity Maxim is the most frequently used, indicating a preference for identifying
types that are easy to understand. On the other hand, the Approbation Maxim is the
least used. This study contributes to the understanding of identification in the context
of speech by Guterres’s and offers a deeper understanding and adequate analysis can
be done properly by understanding the problems among students and lecturers.
