Abstract
This thesis analyzes the meaning and function of torii in Miyako Jinja Okinawa. The
main problem studied in this thesis is the meaning and function of torii in Miyako
Jinja Okinawa. This research method uses qualitative descriptive method. The
analysis was conducted using semiotic theory and cultural theory. To understand the
torii as part of the cultural system of Japanese society and describe the meaning and
function contained in the torii. Which has a meaning in terms of materials that
emphasize the closeness of the Torii building to nature. The south direction is in
harmony with the flow of natural energy and the movement of the sun. The large size
of the torii is a symbol of strength and respect for the Gods. The meaningful color of
the torii symbolizes the close relationship between the human world and the natural
world. The intricate and elegant shape of the myōjin torii symbolizes the sanctity and
spirituality attached to the deity. In terms of function, the torii is a boundary between
sacred and profane areas, as the first stage of purification, and as a marker of the
existence of God in the area.
