    Differences in Dentinal Bridge Formation in Direct Pulp Capping of Maxillary First Molars in Wistar Rats Between Calcium Phosphate Paste from Snakehead Fish Bone (Channa striata) and Dycal®

    Abstract
    Dental caries, or hard tissue disease, is a major problem in oral health today, alongside periodontal disease. The consequences of pulp exposure due to caries, trauma, or incorrect tooth preparation can be severe, leading to pain and infection. An alternative procedure for dental caries is pulp capping. One of the materials used in pulp capping is calcium hydroxide, which can stimulate the formation of a new dentinal bridge in the exposed pulp. This study aimed to determine whether calcium and phosphorus extract from snakehead fish bone, prepared in paste form, could be an alternative pulp capping material, based on the formation of new dentinal bridges, due to the high calcium and phosphorus content of snakehead fish bone. This study was conducted to determine the differences in dentinal bridge formation between snakehead fish bone paste and Dycal® on maxillary molar teeth of Wistar rats. This type of research is an experimental laboratory study on experimental animals with a post-test only control group design using white male Wistar rats. The sample of this study was the maxillary first molar teeth of white male Wistar rats aged 10-12 weeks and weighing 150-250 grams, totaling 30 Wistar rats. The samples in this study were divided into 5 groups: a group treated with 25% snakehead fish bone paste, a group treated with 50% snakehead fish bone paste, a group treated with 75% snakehead fish bone paste, a positive control group using Dycal® and a negative control group. The results of this study were evaluated histologically using a light microscope. The resulting data were tested using the Kruskal Wallis test followed by the Mann Whitney test. The evaluation results of this study showed a significant difference in inflammatory response between Dycal® and 75% snakehead fish bone calcium phosphate paste. There was no significant difference in odontoblast cell layers or dentinal bridge formation between Dycal® and 75% snakehead fish bone calcium phosphate paste. It can be concluded that 75% snakehead fish bone calcium phosphate paste is capable of stimulating dentinal bridge formation and can therefore be used as an alternative material for direct pulp capping treatment.
