Differences in Effect of Irrigation Material Ethanol Extract of Binahong Leaves (Anredera Cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis) With a Combination of 2.5% Sodium Hypochlorite and 17% EDTA in Removing Root Canal Smear Layer (A Sem Study)
Abstract
Root canal irrigation is a crucial step in supporting successful root canal treatment.
Combinations of certain irrigants can enhance the effectiveness of the irrigation
solution and contribute to treatment success. However, no irrigant has yet met the
ideal irrigation requirements. Binahong leaf extract contains chemical compounds
such as tannins, alkaloids, triterpenoids, flavonoid phenolics, steroids, glycosides, and
saponins, which are expected to be an alternative irrigant. The purpose of this study
was to examine the effect of binahong leaf ethanol extract on the smear layer as a root
canal irrigant.
This was a laboratory experiment with 24 teeth divided into four treatment groups,
each consisting of six samples. All samples were prepared using a ProTaper
Universal Ni-Ti Rotary Instrument using a pressureless crown-down technique and
irrigated according to their respective groups. Group I was irrigated with 2.5%
binahong leaf ethanol extract, Group II with 5% binahong leaf ethanol extract, Group
III with 10% binahong leaf ethanol extract, and Group IV with 2.5% NaOCl + 17%
ETDA solution. The prepared and irrigated samples were sectioned buccolingually.
Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) examination was performed on the apical third.
Root canal cleanliness was determined using a score according to Torabinejad (2003).
Data were analyzed using the Kruskall-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests.
The Kruskall-Wallis test showed a significant difference between groups with p<0.05
(p=0.007). The Mann-Whitney test showed no significant difference (p>0.05) between the 5% binahong extract group and the 2.5% NaOCl + 17% EDTA irrigation
solution group. However, the ethanol extract of binahong leaves at a concentration of
2.5% and 10% had a significant difference with the group of 2.5% NaOCl + 17%
EDTA irrigation solution where P <0.05. So, the results of the study showed that the
best group for cleaning the smear layer was 2.5% NaOCl + 17% EDTA irrigation
solution, 5% binahong leaf ethanol extract, 2.5% binahong leaf ethanol extract, and
10% binahong leaf ethanol extract.
