    Abstract
Hypertension is one of the most common non-communicable diseases experienced by the community. Based on a preliminary survey conducted by researchers in the Matiti Community Health Center Work Area, Doloksanggul Sub-District, 14 of 20 elderly people (70%) had hypertension. Most of them had low physical activity and poor sleep quality. This study aims to determine the relationship between physical activity and sleep quality with the incidence of hypertension in the elderly in the Matiti Community Health Center Work Area, Doloksanggul District. The study was analytical with a cross sectional design. The population was all elderly people residing in the Matiti Community Health Center Work Area, Doloksanggul District. A sample of 99 was taken using a purposive sampling method. The collected data were primary data from questionnaire interviews and secondary data from medical records. Data analysis was carried out using univariate and bivariate analysis using the Chi-square test. The results obtained a prevalence rate of hypertension of 66,7%. The highest proportion of hypertension respondents was in the 61-65 years age group (46,5%), female gender (64,6%), high school education (67,7%), farmer occupation (73,7%), heavy physical activity (48,5%) and poor sleep quality (78,8%). The results of the bivariate analysis showed a significant relationship between physical activity and the incidence of hypertension in the elderly (p = 0,042) and there was a significant relationship between sleep quality and the incidence of hypertension in the elderly (p = 0,004). Promotive and preventive efforts need to be carried out in the community, especially the elderly, to encourage a healthy lifestyle, as well as increase participation in Posbindu PTM, Prolanis and Posyandu Lansia activities to prevent hypertension in the elderly.
