Love in life and literature is often seen not only as a romantic bond, but also as a
complex emotional process that involves healing, trust, and sacrifice. This study
aims to explain how love is explored through two main characters in Nicholas
Sparks' novel Safe Haven. The research was conducted by applying Janet
Burroway's characterization concept to reveal the methods of character depiction
and Robert J. Sternberg's Triangular Theory of Love to explore the forms of
relationships that exist. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative with
in-depth analysis techniques, and information is obtained through narrative
quotations and dialogues that reflect character development and the dynamics of
love. The findings of the study show that initially, Katie is portrayed as a closed
person, but later develops into a stronger individual who is more open to love. On
the other hand, Alex is portrayed as a calm, patient, and loving figure, capable of
providing Katie with a sense of security. Their relationship reflects a perfect love
characterized by a balance between intimacy, passion, and commitment. This study
confirms that healthy experiences of love can serve as an important element in
establish positive relationships.
