dc.description.abstract | This study discusses the plantation hospital owned by Deli Maatschappij,
focusing on the colonial period. The study aims to explain the history of the
hospital's establishment and its impact on plantation workers and the local
community. The research method used is the historical research method, which
consists of several steps: heuristics, criticism, interpretation, and historiography.
Data was collected through literature review by analysing documents such as
archives, newspapers, books, and academic works. The research findings indicate
that the construction and healthcare of a plantation hospital was not solely for the
company's own benefit. Improved health among plantation workers led to
increased productivity, even doubling it. Bangkattan Hospital was initially a
specialised hospital for plantation labourers owned by Deli Maatschappij.
However, after renovations, Bangkattan Hospital also became available to
Europeans living in the surrounding area. Bangkattan Hospital is located in
Bindjai, which was previously part of the Langkat district. Bangkattan Hospital
was affiliated with 12 plantations in the surrounding area. Bangkattan Hospital
provided modern healthcare services and adequate facilities for the treatment and
care of plantation workers and the local community, resulting in satisfactory
outcomes for those who received treatment. This improved the local community's
perception of European medicine. | en_US |
