    Abstract
Occupational diseases are diseases that can be caused by work environment factors and the type of work itself. Contact dermatitis is an occupational skin disease that commonly occurs in workers, especially in informal sector workers such as scavengers. Scavengers at the Terjun Medan Marelan landfill work in direct contact with waste, putting them at high risk of contact dermatitis. Scavengers experience symptoms of contact dermatitis such as itching, redness, vesicle, and skin lesions. This study aims to determine the relationship between the use of personal protective equipment and personal hygiene with symptoms of contact dermatitis in scavengers at the Terjun Medan Marelan landfill. This study method is analytic with a cross sectional design. The population in this study were all scavengers who worked at the Terjun Medan Marelan landfill, totaling 500 people. The sampling technique used purposive sampling with a total sample size of 83 scavengers. Data were collected by interview using a questionnaire and making observations using an observation sheet and analyzed univariately and bivariately with the chi-square test. The results showed that the majority of the scavengers were ≥ 40 years old, the duration of contact was ≥ 8 hours, there were 78 people (94.0%) who did not use personal protective equipment, 61 people (73.5%) who had poor personal hygiene, and 75 people (90.4%) who had symptoms of contact dermatitis. The results also show that there is a relationship between the use of personal protective equipment and symptoms of contact dermatitis with a p-value = 0.006, there is a relationship between personal hygiene and symptoms of contact dermatitis with a p-value = 0.000. It is recommended that the Medan City Environmental Agency work together to carry out socialization activities on the importance of using complete and proper personal protective equipment, as well as providing sanitation facilities and education related to good personal hygiene behavior.
