The Influence of Social Support on Support and Treatment Care Services in MSM (Male Sex Male) Group at Helvetia Public Health Center Medan
Abstract
Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM) are one of the key HIV population whose sexual behavior can be cantagious or transmitting HIV/STIs. However, many MSM still do not access health services including PDP services to undergo testing, prevention, or treatment. This is due to high discrimination in society against their status, lack of support from those closest to them, and the concerns if the test results are positive. The concerns are fear of being shunned by those closest to them, losing their jobs, experiencing violence, or even dying. Therefore, social support is essential from their closest individuals or from the environment for encourage them to access health services, remain optimistic about the results of the diagnosis, and be compliant in undergoing treatment and prevention. This study used a type of analytical survei research with a cross-sectional design. The participants of this study were MSM that utilized PDP services at the Helvetia Health Center per month was 478 people, with sample determination using purposive accidental sampling obtained was 83 people. Data analysis used univariate, bivariate, and multivariate (logistic regression analysis). The outcomes of this study indicated that all support variables have and impact on utilization of PDP services by LSL, and the most dominant variable to influence is informational support. Recomendation for health workers at the Helvetia Health Center is to increase the provision of social support to MSM and support them to open their status to families or friends in order to get more social support. It is also sugested that the HIV community need to elevate the outreach to MSM to access PDP services.
