    Abstract
Drinking water is a basic need that is very important for human life. However, not all sources of drinking water meet quality standards, especially in terms of microbiology. Therefore, proper drinking water management is needed to kill E.coli that can cause water-based diseases such as diarrhea. This study is a descriptive observational study with a cross sectional design that aims to analyze the characteristics and behavior of the community as well as the presence of E. coli in drinking water in Lingkungan V Kelurahan Simalingkar B in 2025. The population of this study was all households that use spring water as a source of drinking water, namely 31 households. The sampling technique used purposive sampling with the criteria of households that are settled and use spring water as a water source. The object sample consisted of 7 drinking water samples based on the type of management, namely water directly from the spring (1 sample), untreated water (2 samples), boiled water (2 samples), and water stored in dispensers (2 samples). Data were collected through observation, questionnaires, and laboratory examination. The results showed that most of the respondents were female (87.1%) and young adults (≤ 40 years old) as much as 54.8%. A total of 54.8% had higher education, and 48.4% were housewives. The highest number of family members was five people (38.7%). A total of 67.7% of respondents had good knowledge, 87.1% had good attitudes, and 74.2% had good actions. From the results of laboratory tests on drinking water, 71.4% of samples did not meet the requirements because E. coli was detected. The community is expected to carry out proper management of household drinking water so that the quality of water remains safe for consumption.
