Management of Nursing Care for Adolescent Girls with Dysmenorrhea through Lavender Aromatherapy Candle Intervention in Gedung Johor
Abstract
Senior practicum is one of the courses in the professional nurse education program at the Faculty of Nursing, University of North Sumatera, aimed at enhancing students’ skills in directly applying nursing theories and concepts. One of the competencies developed is the ability to provide nursing care independently or collaboratively using the nursing process, from assessment to evaluation. In this practicum, the focus of care was directed at adolescent girls experiencing dysmenorrhea. Dysmenorrhea is a common menstrual pain among adolescents that affects daily activities, sleep patterns, and emotional well-being. Management can be carried out through both pharmacological and non-pharmacological approaches, one of which is aromatherapy. The objective of this practicum was to provide nursing care to three adolescent girls with dysmenorrhea through relaxation techniques using lavender aromatherapy candles. The practicum was conducted from June 14 to 20, 2025, with a three-day consecutive intervention in which the lavender aromatherapy candles were administered for 30–60 minutes daily during episodes of pain. Evaluation results showed a significant decrease in pain scale among all participants, from an initial scale of 6–7 to 2–3, along with more relaxed facial expressions post-intervention. These findings indicate that relaxation techniques using lavender aromatherapy candles are effective as a non-pharmacological therapy to reduce menstrual pain intensity and alleviate anxiety. This intervention may serve as a complementary therapy option in maternity nursing practice, particularly in addressing dysmenorrhea complaints among adolescent girls.
