This study examines the synthesis of Schiff bases through the condensation reaction of cellulose dialdehyde from empty palm bunches with methylamine as a wet strength agent. Cellulose dialdehyde was obtained from the oxidation reaction of empty palm bunches cellulose with sodium periodate as a selective oxidizer. The cellulose dialdehyde formed can be shown from the results of FT-IR spectrum analysis which shows a peak at 1674.68 cm-1 which shows the C=O aldehyde group. Cellulose dialdehyde was carried out with 3 time variations, namely 3 hours, 6 hours, and 9 hours with the best results obtained at a time variation of 9 hours with %DO as much as 53.7% and carbonyl content as much as 6.25%. Schiff base synthesis was carried out by reacting cellulose dialdehyde with methylamine as a source of amine groups. The formation of Schiff base is supported by the results of FT-IR spectrum analysis at the peak of 1635.50 cm-1 which shows the C=N group. The resulting Schiff base has a nitrogen content of 0,238% and SEM analysis results showing an irregular Schiff base surface. The Schiff base was then added as an alternative WSA to the paper which was then tested for tensile strength of 6,973 kN/m where this result is in accordance with SNI 8484: 2015 concerning paper and cardboard where the minimum tensile index for a grammage of 60g/m2 is 1.6 kN/m.en_US
