Background: self-medication is commonly practiced by students in boarding schools due to limited access to healthcare facilities and the demand for independence. However, the use of over-the-counter drugs without sufficient knowledge may lead to adverse effects. Therefore, evaluating students’ knowledge and attitudes toward self-medication is essential to promote the safe and rational use of medications. Objective: this study was conducted to examine the level of knowledge and attitudes regarding the use of over-the-counter drugs for self-medication among students at Pesantren Ar-Raudlatul Hasanah Medan. Methods: this research employed a descriptive quantitative cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 350 active students from Madrasah Tsanawiyah and Madrasah Aliyah at Ar-Raudlatul Hasanah Islamic Boarding School, selected using a cluster sampling technique. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods with SPSS version 25. Results: the students demonstrated a good level of knowledge regarding the use of OTC and limited OTC medications, with 62.9% categorized as knowledgeable. Likewise, 75.4% of respondents showed a positive attitude toward self-medication. Chi-square test results revealed a significant relationship (p < 0.05) between knowledge and respondents’ gender, age, and educational level. There was also a significant association between attitude and gender Conclusion: the students at Ar-Raudlatul Hasanah Islamic Boarding School generally possess good knowledge and attitudes toward self-medication using OTC and limited OTC drugs.en_US
