Management of Mental Health Nursing Service and Care: Readiness for Enhancing Adolescent Self-Concept through Stress Management in Marindal II Village, Patumbak Subdistrict, Deli Serdang Regency
Abstract
Adolescents are an age group vulnerable to stress due to significant physical, psychological, social, and cognitive changes. Poorly managed stress can negatively impact adolescents’ self-concept, affecting their confidence and independence in fulfilling developmental tasks. This practicum aimed to assess the readiness for improving adolescent self-concept through stress management in Marindal II Village, Patumbak Subdistrict, Deli Serdang Regency. The method used was mental health nursing care for three adolescents aged 14–16 years, with direct assessment techniques and stress level measurement using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS). The assessment results showed that all clients experienced mild stress with PSS scores ranging from 14 to 20, with the main problems identified being a lack of ability to manage academic, social, and family-related stress. Interventions provided included stress management education covering deep breathing relaxation, progressive muscle relaxation, assertive training, and diary writing. Evaluation showed an increase in clients’ understanding of stress management, although the implementation of assertive training still requires further guidance. The conclusion of this practicum is that stress management is effective in increasing adolescents' readiness to improve self-concept. The recommendation from this practicum is the need for ongoing support from families, teachers, and the social environment to help adolescents consistently apply stress management techniques to optimize their self-concept development.
