Abstract

Background: Professional Pharmacist Internship in hospitals is a crucial stage in professional pharmacy education for applying pharmaceutical knowledge, developing managerial skills, and improving professional competence in clinical pharmacy services. This activity aims to ensure that pharmacists are able to provide optimal, patient-oriented services and contribute significantly to the interprofessional health team. Objective: The objective of this internship is to understand, master, and carry out the duties and functions of a pharmacist at the H. Adam Malik General Hospital in Medan. The main focus includes the management of pharmaceutical preparations, medical devices, and disposable medical supplies, as well as providing clinical pharmacy services such as prescription screening, drug preparation, and patient counseling to achieve effective and safe drug therapy. Summary: Professional Pharmacist Internship at H. Adam Malik General Hospital in Medan was conducted over several weeks with rotations in various departments, including the Outpatient Pharmacy Department, Inpatient Pharmacy Department, Emergency Pharmacy Department, and pharmacy warehouse. During the internship, participating pharmacists were directly involved in various activities such as supply chain management, storage, distribution, and drug monitoring. Participants were also active in clinical pharmacy activities, such as conducting Drug Related Problems (DRPs) analysis, Medication Reconciliation, and providing drug information to health professionals and patients. Interaction with doctors, nurses, and other health professionals was an important part of this practice to ensure effective collaboration in patient care. Conclusion: Professional Pharmacist Internship at H. Adam Malik General Hospital in Medan provides comprehensive and insightful practical experience for participating pharmacists. This experience not only strengthens their theoretical understanding of hospital pharmacy management but also hones their communication and collaboration skills in a clinical setting. As a result, participating pharmacists are prepared to tackle challenges in the workplace and deliver high-quality pharmaceutical services focused on patient safety and wellness.
