dc.description.abstract | Background: Binahong leaves are one of the typical Indonesian plants that have
wound healing, analgesic, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidiabetic,
antihyperlipidemia, antihypertensive and anticancer properties. It contains
flavonoid, tannin, alkaloid, and saponin compounds that have antibacterial activity.
Objective: To determine the antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of binahong
leaves against Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus and to see the
difference in antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of binahong leaves extracted
by MAE and maceration methods.
Methods: This study includes the preparation of simplisia, characterization of
simplisia, phytochemical screening, extraction by MAE and maceration methods
using 70% ethanol and testing the antibacterial activity of ethanol extracts of
binahong leaves diluted using DMSO into several concentrations, namely 500
mg/ml; 200 mg/mL; 100 mg/mL; 50 mg/mL; 25 mg/mL; 12,5 mg/mL; 6,25 mg/mL;
3,125 mg/mL; 1,56 mg/mL; 0,78 mg/mL with positive control of Chloramphenicol
against Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus aureus by agar diffusion
method.
Results: Ethanol extract of binahong leaves extracted by MAE and maceration had
antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acnes with KHM at concentrations
of 6,25 mg/mL; 3, 125 mg/mL at 7,48±0,17 mm, respectively: 7,53±0,08 mm and
against Staphylococcus aureus with KHM at concentration 1,56 mg/mL of
6,55±0,06 mm and 7,2±0,7 mm respectively.
Conclusion: Ethanol extract of binahong leaves extracted by MAE and maceration
methods have antibacterial activity against Propionibacterium acnes and
Staphylococcus aureus bacteria and there is no significant difference between the
two methods. | en_US |
