dc.description.abstract | Waste remains an environmental health issue in Indonesia. Daily household activities generate various types of waste, including organic, inorganic, hazardous and toxic waste. The management of hazardous and toxic waste by housewives has not been optimal, hazardous and toxic waste that is disposed of without proper management poses risks such as environmental pollution and threats to human health. This study aims to analyze the characteristics of housewives, hazardous and toxic waste waste, including the types, characteristics, quantity, and management practices. This study is a descriptive survey that describes hazardous and toxic waste management at the household level. The study was conducted in Padang Bulan Subdistrict, with a population of 2.078 housewives. The sample consisted of 95 housewives, determined using the slovin formula and purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using a questionnaire that included questions on the characteristics of housewives and management. The results showed that the majority of housewives were aged 48–59 years (46,3%), had a secondary education (73,7%), were unemployed (56,8%), and 71,6% had a family income below the Medan City minimum wage (Rp. 4.014.072). The types of domestic hazardous and toxic waste were mainly from expired products (84,4%), with the remaining 15,6% from non-specific B3 sources. The characteristics found were: 72,8% toxic, 11,8% corrosive, 5,2% flammable, 8,1% explosive, and 2,1% infectious. The quantity of hazardous and toxic waste ranged from 67 grams to 1.050 grams per week. The study found that 49,5% of housewives had sufficient knowledge about hazardous and toxic waste, 80% had a positive attitude, and 88,4% had poor management practices.It is recommended that housewives manage waste to help reduce its quantity and prevent environmental impacts. Socialization programs need to be implemented at the household level by village level government, and accessible facilities for the collection and processing of hazardous and toxic waste should be provided for the community. | en_US |
