Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) is an effort to ensure the physical and mental well-being of workers while supporting increased work productivity. Workload is a condition that arises due to an imbalance between job demands and an individual's ability to complete tasks physically, mentally, and in terms of time. A high workload, especially in shift work systems, can affect the sleep quality of nurses, which plays a crucial role in maintaining the quality of healthcare services. This study aims to determine the relationship between workload based on work shifts and sleep quality among inpatient nurses at TK II Putri Hijau Hospital Medan. This research employed a quantitative analytic method with a cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 63 nurses selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using a workload questionnaire and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Data analysis was conducted using univariate and bivariate methods with the Spearman correlation test. The results showed a significant relationship between workload and sleep quality during the evening shift (p = 0.021; r = -0.499) and night shift (p = 0.047; r = -0.488). However, no significant relationship was found during the morning shift (p = 0.080). These findings indicate that although the highest workload was found during the morning shift, the impact of workload on decreased sleep quality was more prominent and significant during the evening and night shifts. Therefore, it is recommended that the hospital management optimize workload distribution based on work shifts, particularly during the evening and night shifts, to support nurses’ sleep quality and performance.en_US
