Nursing Care for Primiparous Mothers in the Care of Newborns at Prof. Dr. Chairuddin P. Lubis Hospital
Abstract
Primiparous mothers are a group of mothers who are at risk of having a lack of knowledge about newborn care because they have no experience in caring for newborns. Newborns are dependent on their mothers for care. This study aims to describe the nursing care provided to primiparous mothers in meeting the care needs of newborn babies. The method used is a case study with a nursing process approach, which includes assessment, nursing diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation. The subject of this case study was Mrs. D, a 21-year-old primiparous mother, who was admitted to the Maternity Ward of Prof. Dr. Chairuddin P. Lubis Hospital. The case study results indicated that the priority nursing diagnosis was knowledge deficit. The plan for both diagnoses was formulated based on SIKI, SDKI, and SLKI. The nursing implementation provided included education on newborn care using leaflets as a medium. The nursing evaluation showed that the mother had an understanding of newborn care, as evidenced by her ability to explain the educational material, which included umbilical cord care, bathing the baby, maintaining genital hygiene, keeping the baby warm, providing exclusive breastfeeding, and immunisation. However, the mother’s attitude and ability in caring for newborns were not evaluated due to the nurse’s time constraints in conducting the practice and hospital facilities. In conclusion, appropriate education can help improve the knowledge of primiparous mothers in caring for their babies independently.
