Fruit flies (Bactrocera spp.) are one of the main pests of tomato plants and can cause significant yield losses. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of various color-based traps and petrogenol in attracting fruit flies, as well as to identify the species composition of the trapped flies. The research was conducted in Dokan Village, Merek Subdistrict, Karo Regency from January to May 2025, using a non-factorial Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with four types of traps: petrogenol traps, red-colored ball traps, yellow-colored ball traps, and green-colored ball traps, each with six replications. Species identification of the fruit flies was carried out at the Laboratory of Plant Pests and Diseases, Agrotechnology Study Program, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Sumatera Utara. The results showed that the petrogenol trap was the most effective in attracting fruit flies, especially males, with the highest average catch of 66.00 individuals. The number of male flies caught was significantly higher than that of females. The dominant species found was Bactrocera dorsalis, with the highest dominance index (0.81) and an average population density index of 28.22. Other species such as Bactrocera carambolae, Zeugodacus tau, and unidentified species were found in much lower numbers. Color traps without chemical attractants were generally less effective, particularly in capturing female flies. This study concludes that petrogenol traps are effective for monitoring male fruit flies, especially B. dorsalis, but less effective for females.en_US
