Propylene glycol is a colorless, odorless and tasteless compound produced through the glycerol hydrogenolysis reaction. Propylene glycol is widely used as a solvent of aromatic compounds in the concentrate industry and is used as a humectant in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. The pre-designed plant for the manufacture of propylene glycol from glycerol is designed with a production capacity of 60,000 tons/year and operates for 330 days a year. In the production
process, three stages are used, namely: glycerol dehydration reaction, hydrogenation reaction and product purification. The location of the factory is planned to be in Sungai Linau village, Siak Kecil District, Riau Province with a land area of 12,474 m2. The workforce needed by 183 people in the form of a factory business entity is a Limited Liability Company (PT) with an organizational structure of lines and staff. The results of the economic evaluation show the value of investment capital (CI) of Rp. 3,192,574,319,074, total production costs of Rp.
2,605,168,034,689 and sales profit of Rp. 450,585,815,368 with a net profit of Rp. 291,784,376,089. The plant is projected to break even even (BEP) at 31.015% of capacity with return on investment (POT) for 10 years and 11 months. Based on the results of economic analysis, the pre-design of this factory is considered feasible to be established.
