Background: Lip balm is a treatment preparation that is applied to the lips. The goal is to moisturize the lips so that theyare not easily dry and chapped. Argan oil was rich in vitamin E, phenols, unsaturated fatty acids, carotenoids, and squalene. Experts have proven that this oil is very beneficial for the skin health. Ricinus oil can function to regulate shine.
Objective: To formulate and test the physical characteristics of lip balm preparations containing argan oil combined with castor oil.
Methods: Argan oil, formulated in a 20 % concentration lip balm preparation, combines with 2% (F1), 4% (F2), and 6% (F3) concentrations of ricinus oil. A blank (F0) used the basic formula of lip balm preparation without ricinus oil. Tests of the characteristics of the argan oil lip balm preparation combined with ricinus oil include organoleptic, homogeneity, measurement of pH, melting temperature, spreadability, and smearbility.
Results: The preparation of argan oil lip balm combined with ricinus oil produces a reddish color , chocolate scented, and a solid form. The resulting lip balm preparation was homogeny, pH 5.51-5.56 which is per the physiological pH of the skin (4.5-6.5), melting poin 55-58⁰C which is was the requirements (50-70⁰C), spreadability 3.9-5 cm which is was the requirements (3-5 cm), the smear test that has argan oil with a concentration of 20% and ricinus oil with concentration of 6% was the easiest to apply and shiny.
Conclusion: Argan oil combines with ricinus oil can be formulated into a lip balm preparation that the characteristics has meet the requirements.
