Nursing Care for Patients After Oophorectomy Indications for Ovarian Cysts
Abstract
The incidence of ovarian cysts at Prof. Chairuddin Panusunan Lubis University Hospital, University of North Sumatra, from March to May 2025 was 33 cases. Oophorectomy is one of the medical procedures performed to treat ovarian cysts by removing one or both ovaries. Patients who have undergone oophorectomy are at risk of developing various health issues due to the loss of their ovaries. This study aims to describe nursing care for patients who have undergone oophorectomy due to ovarian cysts. The method used was a case study with a nursing process approach. The results showed that out of 6 theoretical nursing diagnoses, 3 diagnoses emerged in this case study: pain, body image disturbance, and risk of sexual dysfunction. Nursing planning was based on Indonesian nursing intervention standards: pain management, body image promotion, and sexuality education. The nursing interventions implemented included identifying the pain scale, providing non-pharmacological techniques to reduce pain, discussing changes in the body and its functions, discussing ways to develop realistic body image expectations, and explaining the anatomy and physiology of the reproductive system. The nursing evaluation results showed that the patient experienced a decrease in pain scale to 3, had realistic expectations about their body image, and had good knowledge of sexual function. Recommendations for nursing care include that nurses should have knowledge about interventions to address sexual dysfunction to provide comprehensive support to patients
