Solar Power Plants (PLTS) are one of the growing renewable energy solutions and are
generally installed in open areas. This condition causes PLTS to have a high risk of
lightning strikes that can cause equipment damage and disruption to system operations. To
overcome this, a reliable and effective lightning protection system is needed. This study
designs a lightning rod system on the rooftop of HKBP Nommensen University Medan
using the class II rolling ball method, which has an imaginary radius of 30 meters. Each
lightning rod is designed with a height of 3 meters and is equipped with a 4-meter
grounding system. Based on the design results, a total of 13 lightning rod units are needed
to cover and protect the entire PLTS area on two rooftop buildings. The analysis results
show that the entire area has entered the protection zone that meets the criteria of the rolling
ball method, so this system is able to provide comprehensive protection against potential
lightning strikes.
