    Abstract
    Background: high number of cases self-harmin Indonesia shows the need to identify the motivation for self-harm actions which can be done using motivation measurement instruments self-injury or Self-Injury Motivation Scale(SIMS), which has been widely used in various countries, but there is no Indonesian version available that has been tested for validity and reliability. Objective: test the validity and reliability of the instrument Self Injury Motivation Scale (SIMS) Indonesian version. Method: quantitative research design with an approach cross sectional Respondents were psychiatric patients in five hospitals in Medan City. Data were analyzed using content validity, construct validity, internal consistency reliability, and test-retest reliability. Results: The majority of respondents were young adults, female, mostly employed, married, had a normal BMI, and came from various ethnicities. The majority were diagnosed with depression. Content validity testing showed that all SIMS items were deemed relevant by experts, convergent validity in the construct validity test had good results and showed high internal consistency reliability overall. Test-retest testing also proved the instrument was stable. Conclusion: The Indonesian version of the SIMS instrument is declared valid and reliable and can be used to conduct clinical assessments to determine motivation.self-injury.
