The Influence of Video and Comics Media on Personal Hygiene Knowledge and Attitude during Menstruation in Students at Smpit Al-Fityan Medan
Abstract
Menstruation is a natural biological process that will be experienced by every young woman and requires understanding and the right attitude in maintaining personal hygiene. Lack of accurate information on personal hygiene during menstruation can lead to less than optimal hygiene practices and risks to reproductive health. This study aims to determine the effect of video and comic media on changes in knowledge and attitudes of female students regarding personal hygiene during menstruation at SMPIT Al-Fityan Medan. The research method used was a quasi-experimental with pretest and posttest. The subjects of the study were 64 female students in grades VII and VIII who were divided into two intervention groups, namely the video media group and the comic media group. The instruments used were 4-minute videos and comics about personal hygiene during menstruation. The results showed that there were differences in the effect of using video and comic media on female students' knowledge and attitudes regarding personal hygiene during menstruation. The Mann-Whitney test showed that the average ranking value of knowledge for the comic media group (mean rank = 41.70) was higher than the video media group (mean rank = 23.30) immediately after the intervention with a p-value of 0.000. Comic media showed a better level of knowledge on several indicators one week after the intervention. In conclusion, both educational media are effective in improving students' knowledge and attitudes regarding personal hygiene during menstruation, with comics tending to be more optimal in retaining long-term information. Efforts are needed from SMPIT Al-Fityan Medan to implement learning materials on personal hygiene during menstruation in schools from the beginning of students' junior high school years.
