Food waste is food that is still edible but discarded by consumers. Based on a report from the United Nations Enviromental Program in 2024, Indonesia is the country that produces the most food waste in Southeast Asia, which is 14.73 million tons per year. Based on SIPSN data in 2024, the province of North Sumatra produces waste generation of 1.045 million tons with a percentage of food waste of 30.79%. This study aims to determine the determinants of food waste behavior among overseas students in Padang Bulan Selayang I Village, Medan City. The method used in this research is quantitative with a sampling technique, namely stratified random sampling technique with a cross sectional approach method. The sample in this study were migrant students who rented a place to live in Padang Bulan Selayang I Village, totaling 96 people. Data were collected through filling out questionnaires and observing food waste generation then analyzed univariately and bivariately using the chi-square test. The results showed that the consumptive action factor (p=0.0001) and food taste (p=0.0001) had a significant relationship with food waste behavior while the frequency of eating factor (p=0.922) had no relationship with food waste behavior. It can be concluded that food waste behavior in migrant students is related to consumptive actions and food taste. Based on the results of this research, it is recommended that migrant students reduce consumptive lifestyles by prioritizing purchases out of necessity.en_US
