The Main Character from The Film Ready Player One
Abstract
Background: The development of virtual reality in contemporary cinema reflects the growing relevance of digital identity in modern life. Ready Player One (2018), directed by Steven Spielberg, presents a futuristic world where people escape reality through the virtual universe of the OASIS. This study focuses on the description of the main character, Wade Watts (Parzival), as he navigates both the virtual and real worlds.
Objective: This study aims to analyze how the character of Wade Watts is portrayed in the film and how his traits contribute to the larger themes of freedom, identity, and resistance.
Method: This research uses a qualitative descriptive analysis, using M.J. Murphy’s theory of characterization as the main framework. Murphy’s approach, which includes characterization through speech, physical appearance, conversation of others, reactions, and direct authorial comment, is applied to the film’s narrative and audiovisual elements. Data are collected by watching the film multiple times and identifying scenes that highlight the character's development.
Findings: Wade Watts is portrayed as a brave, intelligent, and idealistic young man who grows from a passive gamer into a leader who inspires collective action. His character serves as a symbol of resistance against corporate control and a voice for the value of human connection in both virtual and real life. Through Murphy’s methods, the film reveals Wade’s transformation and how he embodies the fight for freedom and identity in a digital era.
Conclusion: The portrayal of Wade Watts in Ready Player One not only drives the narrative but also reflects broader cultural concerns about technology, control, and selfhood. The character becomes a symbol of hope and change, making him a central figure in understanding the film’s message.
