This study aims to describe the mental health condition of adolescents addicted to
online games in Medan City. The background of this research is based on the
increasing prevalence of mental health problems among adolescents and the rising
use of online games, which may negatively affect emotional, behavioral, and social
aspects. This research employed a quantitative descriptive method with 100
participants aged 12–18 years who live in Medan City. Respondents were identified
as online game addicts using the Internet Gaming Disorder-20 (IGD-20) test, while
their mental health condition was assessed using the Strengths and Difficulties
Questionnaire (SDQ), which covers five dimensions: Emotional Symptoms,
Conduct Problems, Hyperactivity/Inattention, Peer Relationship Problems, and
Prosocial Behavior. The findings showed that most respondents were categorized
as Very High in Emotional Symptoms, Conduct Problems, and Peer Relationship
Problems, while Hyperactivity/Inattention was generally low. In the Prosocial
Behavior dimension, most respondents remained in the average category. These
results indicate that adolescents addicted to online games are vulnerable to
emotional disturbances, behavioral difficulties, and peer relationship problems,
although they still maintain prosocial behavior.
