Naming of Arabic-Language Clothing Stores in Central Market of Medan (An Anthropolinguistic Study)
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the meanings and cultural values embedded in the naming of clothing stores that use the Arabic language. This research is a field study. The method used is qualitative, with data collection techniques including observation, interviews, and documentation. The theory applied is The theories used are anthropological linguistics theory on the meaning of naming and theory on cultural values. The results indicate that the naming of stores reflects three categories of meaning: futuristic, situational, and nostalgic. There are 16 stores with futuristic meanings, 10 stores with situational meanings, and four stores with nostalgic meanings. Additionally, seven cultural values are reflected: well-being, hard work, education, preservation of cultural creativity, commitment, positive thinking, and gratitude. Specifically, there are five stores associated with the value of well-being, 13 stores with the value of hard work, one store with the values of education and gratitude, two stores with the values of preservation of cultural creativity and positive thinking, and finally, six stores with the value of commitment.
