Analisis Honne dan Tatemae Dalam Anime “Hananoi-Kun To Koi No Yamai” Karya Megumi Morino

Abstract

This study discusses the representation of honne and tatemae in the anime Hananoi-kun to Koi no Yamai by Megumi Morino. Communication patterns in Japanese society often show a distinction between true feelings or desires (honne) and the behavior or speech displayed in public (tatemae) to maintain social harmony. The purpose of this study is to describe the functions of honne and tatemae in the characters' dialogues as well as the communication strategies used in the anime. This research employs a qualitative descriptive analysis method with the object of study being the dialogues and interactions of characters in Hananoi-kun to Koi no Yamai episodes 1 to 12. The results show that the functions of honne and tatemae in the anime are seen in the interactions between characters, where honne represents the real feelings and thoughts often hidden to preserve social harmony through tatemae. The characters use tatemae as an indirect communication strategy for reasons of politeness, subtle refusal, and nonverbal expressions such as intonation and body language to avoid conflict and maintain mutual comfort. This reflects the Japanese cultural tendency to prioritize group harmony and politeness in communication, employing various politeness forms such as negative politeness, positive politeness, off-record strategy, and bald on record to sustain good relationships amid uncertainty and vulnerability in character interactions.
