This study aimed to examine the effect of diabetes self-management education on knowledge and self-efficacy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at Murni Teguh Memorial Hospital, Medan. A quantitative method with a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design was used, involving two groups: an intervention group that received structured diabetes self-management education, and a control group that received only standard care without additional intervention. The study sample consisted of 66 respondents, with 33 patients in the intervention group and 33 patients in the control group, selected through non-probability convenience sampling based on predefined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results showed a significant effect in the intervention group, where the average knowledge score increased from 13.00 to 16.33 (p < 0.001), and self-efficacy improved from 59.18 to 76.45 (p < 0.001). In contrast, no significant changes were observed in the control group in either knowledge (15.36 to 15.39; p = 0.958) or self-efficacy (65.91 to 65.64; p = 0.869). These findings indicate that structured diabetes self-management education is effective in enhancing patients' understanding and self-efficacy in managing type 2 diabetes. The instruments used in this study included a knowledge questionnaire and a self-efficacy questionnaire related to patients' experience and self-management of type 2 diabetes, as well as an educational booklet used as an intervention medium for the intervention group.
