Critical care in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) affects not only the patients but also imposes emotional and psychological stress on their family members. Meeting the needs of families is an essential aspect of improving the quality of holistic and humanistic nursing services. This study employed a qualitative approach with a phenomenological design to explore the needs of family members of patients admitted to the ICU at RSP Prof. Dr. Chairuddin P. Lubis, Universitas Sumatera Utara, Medan. A total of 12 participants were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews lasting 30–60 minutes. Data analysis was conducted using Colaizzi’s method to extract major themes regarding the needs of family members. Data collection instruments included demographic questionnaires, interview guides, field notes, a voice recorder, and the researcher served as the primary instrument. The findings revealed four main themes: psychosocial support, ICU facilities, spiritual support, and family expectations regarding ICU services. The needs of ICU patients’ families include emotional, informational, physical, and spiritual aspects. This study highlights the importance of a holistic approach to ICU care that addresses not only medical aspects but also the psychosocial and spiritual needs of the patient’s family. The results are expected to contribute to the enhancement of nursing service quality in the ICU and serve as a reference for future research in this field.
