Sleep Patterns in Elderly Hypertension Patients in Neighborhood IX, Pangkalan Masyhur Village, Medan Johor District, Medan City
Abstract
Sleep quality and hypertension management are two important aspects in maintaining the health of the elderly. Untreated sleep disorders can worsen hypertension, and ineffective blood pressure management can have an impact on overall well-being. This study aims to describe the implementation of nursing interventions on three elderly cases with sleep and hypertension problems, as well as to assess their impact on blood pressure and sleep quality. A case study approach was used on three elderly respondents, each with different issues: ineffective health management (Mr. R and Mrs. SR) and chronic pain affecting sleep (Mrs. RL). The intervention included education on healthy sleep patterns, decision-making support, acupressure therapy, and non-pharmacological pain management. Evaluation was conducted using blood pressure measurements, PSQI scores, and pain scales. Mr. R showed a decrease in blood pressure from 140/80 to 135/75 mmHg and improved sleep quality with a PSQI score decreasing from 14 to 8. Mrs. SR also experienced a decrease in blood pressure from 140/90 to 130/70 mmHg, as well as improved sleep quality with a PSQI score decreasing from 12 to 6. Meanwhile, Mrs. RL showed a decrease in blood pressure from 160/100 to 145/83 mmHg and a decrease in pain scale from 5 to 3, although sleep quality had not improved (PSQI remained at 18). Nursing interventions such as education, acupressure therapy, and decision-making support can help improve health management and sleep quality in the elderly. However, sleep disturbances caused by chronic pain require long-term management and a multidisciplinary approach for more optimal outcomes.
