Nursing Care Management for Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease Using Alternative Massage Therapy to Reduce Muscle Pain in Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis at Haji Adam Malik General Hospital Medan
Abstract
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a significant global health problem. CKD is characterized by kidney damage or decreased kidney function that lasts for ≥3 months. Kidney failure can be caused by age, gender, and medical history such as diabetes, hypertension, and other metabolic disorders that can lead to decreased kidney function. Some studies have shown that non-pharmacological management can be applied to alleviate pain, such as massage therapy. This senior practice report aims to implement massage therapy on patients undergoing Hemodialysis (HD) therapy at the HD unit of Haji Adam Malik General Hospital Medan who experience muscle pain/cramps by providing alternative massage therapy on the legs. The nursing care management was conducted from June 11 to 18, 2025, with the implementation of assessment, diagnosis, intervention planning, implementation, and evaluation. Nursing care for HD patients who experience discomfort and pain can be implemented through foot massage therapy with a duration of 10-15 minutes per session. In addition to massage therapy, the practice also teaches family members the massage procedure. The results of this nursing care show that alternative massage therapy is able to reduce muscle pain experienced by patients undergoing HD therapy, as indicated by a decrease in pain scale scores before and after massage therapy.
