Kegiatan Preservasi Bahan Pustaka di Dinas Perpustakaan dan Kearsipan Kota Medan

Abstract

Preserving literature is one of the important aspects in library management to ensure that every collection is preserved and can be benefited for the next generations. This research was aiming to know and describe the activity of literary collection preservation conducted in the Library and Archive Agency of Medan City. The method used in this research was qualitative descriptive and data were collected through direct observation, interviews with librarians, and documentation. The research resultsshowed that preservation is done in several steps, which are collection wrapping (penyampulan), library shelves and rooms cleaning, book rebinding, fumigation which is done twice a year, room temperature and humidity control, and efforts on collection digitalization. Though conducted in simple manner with limited facilities, this activity shows the commitment of the librarians in preserving the library collections. This research emphasized that awareness and participation of all parties, librarians or library users, are very much needed in supporting the success in preserving literature collection in libraries.
