This study aims to determine the role of self-determination in student engagement among Universitas Sumatera Utara students. The research was driven by the importance of student involvement in learning and the influence of basic psychological needs autonomy, competence, and relatedness. A quantitative approach was employed, involving a survey of 400 active students from various faculties at Universitas Sumatera Utara. The sampling technique used was convenience sampling, and data were collected using the Indonesian version of the Self-Determination Scale (SDS) and Student Engagement Scale (SES). Results from multiple linear regression analysis revealed a significant role of self-determination in student engagement, with a p-value < .001. Together, both dimensions accounted for 20.4% of the variance in student engagement. These findings highlight the importance of supporting students’ self-awareness to enhance their academic involvement.
