Introduction: Migraine and Tension-type Headache (TTH) are types of primary headache with an unknown pathogenesis, with one theory proposing neurogenic inflammation. Human Transforming Growth Factor beta (TGF-β) is a proinflammatory cytokine that is thought to be involved in the occurrence of migraine and TTH. Aim: To determine the correlation between human TGF-β levels and pain severity in migraine and TTH. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional design in patients with migraine and TTH complaints who sought treatment at the Neurology Polyclinic of Adam Malik Hospital Medan and Prof. Dr. Chairuddin P. Lubis Hospital. We used the Spearman analysis test to determine the correlation of human TGF-β levels with pain severity in migraine and TTH. This study involved 30 patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: The results of the Spearman correlation test showed a moderate positive correlation (r: 0.648) which was proved significant with a p value of 0.023 between TGF-β values and the pain severity in migraine. There was a non-significant result with a p value of 0.133 between the value of TGF-β and the pain severity in TTH, and there was a moderate positive correlation (r: 0.523) which was proved significant with a p value of 0.003 between the value of TGF-β and the pain severity in migraine and TTH. Discussion: There is correlation between human TGF-β levels and pain severity in migraine and TTH.en_US
