Design of a Steam-Powered Bicycle Speed Control System Using an Arduino-Based Globe Valve
Abstract
This research aims to design a steam-powered bicycle that uses alternative fuel, with acceleration speed controlled by an Arduino-based Globe Valve. The study also applies a cruise control system so that the speed can be adjusted. The results of the research consist of two conditions: the first is testing without cruise control, in which the valve was adjusted to one, two, three, and four turns of opening. Each time the valve position was changed, the bicycle had to be stopped first. The second condition used a cruise control system, in which a stepper motor adjusted the Globe Valve opening to maintain the predetermined speed over a certain period of time. The test results showed that at the maximum valve opening, the speed achieved was 13 km/h; at three turns, the speed was 11 km/h; at two turns, the speed was 7 km/h; and at one turn, the speed was 3 km/h. Under the cruise control condition, the speed began to stabilize at the 18th second. Based on the data, it can be concluded that the smaller the valve opening, the lower the resulting speed, and vice versa. However, the use of a Globe Valve is less suitable for a cruise control system that requires a fast response.
