Heat polymerized acrylic resin (RAPP) is a material commonly used as a base
for dentures due to its advantages in aesthetics, ease of manipulation, and relatively
affordable price. However, RAPP has the disadvantage of low mechanical strength,
particularly compressive strength, which can lead to fractures in denture bases. This
research aims to determine the effect of adding nanosilica from palm kernel ash at
concentrations of 5% and 6% on the compressive strength of RAPP-based denture
bases. This study was carried out experimentally in the laboratory using a post-test
only control group design with 30 cube-shaped samples according to ISO 604
standards, divided into three groups: control (without nanosilica), 5% nanosilica
addition, and 6% nanosilica addition. The compressive strength test was conducted
using a Universal Testing Machine, and the data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA
and LSD tests. The results of this study showed an average value and standard
deviation for the control group of 66.22 ± 1.27 MPa, the 5% concentration group of
75.46 ± 0.63 MPa, and the 6% concentration group of 80.19 ± 0.86 MPa. The results
indicate that the group with the addition of 6% nanosilica has the highest compressive
strength, followed by the 5% group, while the control group has the lowest. There is a
significant effect (p=0.001) and a meaningful difference between the control group and
the 6% group (p=0.001). This study concluded that the addition of nanosilica from
palm oil shell ash, especially at a concentration of 6%, can significantly increase the
compressive strength of RAPP.
