Management of Nursing Services and Care for the Elderly with Hypertension Problems Through the Benson Relaxation Therapy Method in Environment VIII, Pangkalan Masyhur Village, Medan Johor District
Abstract
Hypertension (high blood pressure) is a condition in which there is an abnormal increase in blood pressure (systolic blood pressure reaches 140 mmHg or more and diastolic pressure reaches 90 mmHg) which occurs continuously and several blood pressure checks. Hypertension management is divided into two, namely pharmacological management and non-pharmacological management. One of the non-pharmacological management that can be done is the Benson relaxation technique. Benson relaxation is a relaxation that combines relaxation response techniques and individual belief systems/faith factors (focused on certain expressions in the form of names of God or words that have a calming meaning for the patient himself which are repeated with a regular rhythm accompanied by an attitude of surrender). This senior practicum aims to identify and measure the success of the knowledge, attitudes, and actions of the elderly who suffer from hypertension through Benson relaxation therapy in Environment VIII, Pangkalan Mashyur Village, Medan Johor District. The methods used in the field learning practice (PBL) include interviews and data collection, as well as teaching the Benson relaxation therapy implementation method to 5 elderly people through pretest and post-test questionnaires of knowledge, attitudes, actions, and observation sheets. Based on the results of the management of nursing services and care to 5 elderly people, there was an increase in knowledge, attitudes, and the elderly were able to implement Benson relaxation. This senior practicum is expected to be an effective alternative in managing hypertension in the elderly in the community.
