Preoperative Education for Patients with Lower Extremity Fractures at Adam Malik Hospital Medan
Abstract
Fractures are a global public health issue and are associated with significant morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Fractures often require surgical procedures that may cause both physical and psychological stress. To reduce this, preoperative education is provided to patients. Preoperative education is health education delivered by healthcare providers before surgery to improve patients’ understanding of procedures, health behaviors, and clinical outcomes. The purpose of this study was to enhance students’ ability to app ly the knowledge gained during their education in providing nursing care to preoperative patients under the Enhanced Recovery After Surgery protocol, with a focus on patient education at Haji Adam Malik Hospital Medan. Data collection was carried out using pre-test and post-test methods for the preoperative and fracture variables. The results of the pre-test and post-test on the preoperative variable showed a significance value (2- tailed) of 0.004 < 0.05, indicating a statistically significant difference, which means there was a meaningful impact after the education was given. However, the results for the fracture variable showed a significance value (2-tailed) of 0.006 > 0.05, indicating to significant difference. Preoperative education is an intervention aimed at improving patients’ understanding of the surgical process and its outcomes, which can reduce stress and anxiety, thereby leading to faster recovery and shorter hospital stay (length of stay).
