Caring for a family member with schizophrenia presents significant challenges for caregivers at home. Individuals with schizophrenia are highly susceptible to relapse and require long-term treatment and care. This illness impacts not only the patients but also their families, particularly the primary caregivers. The consequences experienced by caregivers result in various changes in their daily lives. This study aims to explore the experiences of caregivers in providing care for family members with schizophrenia who have experienced relapse. The research design employed a qualitative method with a descriptive phenomenological approach. A total of ten participants were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews using demographic questionnaires, interview guides, field notes, and audio recording devices. Data analysis was conducted using Colaizzi’s seven-step method. The study identified five emerging themes: changes experienced by caregivers, supporting factors in becoming a caregiver, challenges in caring for a family member with schizophrenia, stigma encountered by caregivers, and hopes for treatment and hospital services. The role of caregivers is crucial in achieving optimal care and preventing relapse in individuals with schizophrenia. Therefore, providing education about schizophrenia is essential to enhance caregivers’ understanding, foster positive attitudes, and develop adequate caregiving skills.
