Technology is currently developing rapidly, especially in the field of communication and telecommunications. This technology is called 5G technology, which can transmit data at high speeds with better quality than previous technologies. To send data using 5G technology, a device is needed, namely an antenna. One type of antenna used is the microstrip antenna because it has a small dimension, is lightweight, and is inexpensive. However, this microstrip antenna has the disadvantage of low gain and bandwidth. To improve the gain and bandwidth, a rectangular microstrip antenna with DGS (Defected Ground Structure) technique has been designed to operate at a frequency of 3.5 GHz. Based on the simulation results of the initial antenna design, a return loss value of -6.721 dB, VSWR of 2.713, bandwidth of 0 MHz, unidirectional radiation pattern, and gain of 5.7425 dB were obtained. Meanwhile, the simulation results of the optimal antenna design yielded a return loss value of -13.5 dB, VSWR of 1.536, bandwidth of 151 MHz, unidirectional radiation pattern, and gain of 5.6709 dB.
