Management of Services and Nursing Care for Patients at Risk of Violent Behavior Through Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) Therapy to Control Emotions at Prof Ildrem Mental Hospital
Abstract
Mental disorders are one of the health issues that are increasingly prevalent in the era of
globalization. One of the manifestations of mental disorders is the Risk of Violent Behavior
(RVB), which is a condition where an individual has the potential to harm themselves, others,
or the environment. Handling violent behavior can be done through non-pharmacological
therapy, one of which is Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) therapy, aimed at helping
patients control their emotions. This report aims to describe the management of services and
nursing care for patients at risk of violent behavior through PMR therapy at Prof. Dr.
Muhammad Ildrem Psychiatric Hospital. Nursing care is provided to clients with a medical
diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia and a primary nursing diagnosis of risk for violence. PMR
therapy was conducted in five structured sessions. The assessment results show that the patient
has difficulty controlling emotions, exhibits angry behavior, and has maladaptive coping
mechanisms. The implementation of PMR therapy helps the patient recognize muscle tension
as an emotional response and develop skills to manage anger independently. Evaluation shows
a decrease in the frequency of aggressive behavior and an increase in self-control. The
conclusion of this nursing care is that Progressive Muscle Relaxation therapy is effective as
an intervention in addressing the risk of violent behavior in patients with mental disorders, and
it also supports the gradual achievement of better emotional control.
