This research discusses the use of satire employed by Monk, a black writer who experiences racial discrimination in the publishing and entertainment industries in America, as his work is considered “not Black enough”. This study aims to analyze the use of types of satire and their functions in the Monk’s utterances in the American fiction movie. The method used in this study is a qualitative method with content analysis, and the data consists of the statements of the main character of the movie, Monk. The results of the study show that Monk uses three types of satire: Horatian, Juvenalian, and Manippean. However, Monk more frequently uses the Juvenalian type, which serves to criticize and condemn the unfair systems of the publishing and entertainment industries toward narratives outside the black stereotype. The conclusion of this study is that satire in American fiction is not merely humorous but serves as social criticism and condemnation of cultural systems that limit the representation of marginalized groups, while also encouraging viewers to think and become aware of the meaning behind these issues.
