This study aims to identify the species of medicinal plants used by the Karo tribe in
Ajijahe Village and to examine the bioactive compounds contained in these plants.
An ethnobotanical approach was used with quantitative and qualitative methods.
Data collection was carried out through observation and semi-structured
interviews using snowball sampling techniques. The results of the study show that
the community utilizes 125 types of medicinal plants from 49 families. The plant
with the highest Use Value is bahing (Zingiber officinale) with a value of 0.53.
Meanwhile, the family with the highest Family Use Value is Piperaceae at 0.31. The
most frequently utilized part of the plant is the leaves (44.8%) because they are easy
to obtain and do not damage the plant. A review of the bioactive compound content
revealed the presence of compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins,
tannins, steroids, and triterpenoids, which play a role in supporting the
effectiveness of traditional medicine.
